Greening, an Madison, Wis. veteran, discusses his Korean War service as a gunner with the 93rd Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bomb Group, 20th Air Force and recalls several specific missions on which he flew. He talks about his feelings when President Harry Truman called the Korean War a "police action," enlisting in the Air Force despite his asthma, training and racial discrimination in Texas, and learning how to use the guns aboard the B-29 bomber. Stationed at Kadena Airfield (Okinawa, Japan) he touches upon bombing bridges at the Yalu river, problems with Russian aircraft, a mission where his plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire, and the close-knit nature of his crew. Greening recalls a mission when his plane bombed a supply of North Korean bombs and another where they supported Australian ground troops. Included is a discussion on applying for officer candidate school, receiving early discharge, forming an Air Force Reserve unit in Pontiac (Michigan), and settling in Madison, Wis.
